Why I’m done saying “trust recession”

Unless you’ve been hiding out in an isolated cabin (which sounds lovely), you’ve probably heard the term “trust recession.”

The term first appeared in 2008, but most recently spiked in 2025, when AI took off, economic uncertainty grew, digital marketing became more saturated, and bizfluencers began falling out of favor as we saw the million-dollar ad spend behind their supposedly “stress-free launches.”

If calling this time a “trust recession” feels empowering to you, or you haven’t felt its effects in your business, then you can stop reading and return to what you were doing.

But if you can relate, hear me out:

I don’t think we’re in a trust recession.

We’re in a discernment boom.

Trust is not lacking right now. People have the same amount of trust within them as before.

It’s just not as freely given.

Before I risk being outed as a millennial snowflake, know that I’m not using "discernment boom" as a fluffy way to feel better. It’s honestly a better descriptor.

(And this copywriter knows the power of exact words…)

A trust recession implies something is lacking – so your only option as business owners is to ride out this wave until the baseline trust magically returns.

Discernment implies engagement: the ability to review information, see what’s hidden, and make smart choices in complex or high-stakes situations.

So when there’s a “boom” in discernment, clients are more engaged in this mental and emotional process. They carefully review information, read between the lines, check in with their gut, and assess risk.

But this is mentally taxing and emotionally overwhelming. 😥

What we see outwardly is clients responding by freezing, frantically buying (and ghosting), or waiting forever to feel things out.

→ The freezers show up as a dip in your inquiries or revenue.

→ The frantic buyers provide confusing data. Prospective clients reach out and ghost, or convert and don't stick around.

→ The feel-things-out folks which I think are the ones to nurture right now – often feel overwhelmed by options, yet confident they'll choose the right person or service when they're ready.

The feel-things-out folks follow you for years: reading every newsletter, checking your website for updates, or listening to your recent podcast interviews, as they save up to invest, wait for a busy season to pass, or allow more clarity to emerge.

Sometimes it only takes ONE newsletter, ONE warm connection, or ONE tweak to your copy for these clients to step forward.

Interestingly, discernment comes from a Latin word meaning “to separate or pull apart.”

Are you feeling pulled apart right now?

That could look like:

  • A great consult call. Until they tell you they have four other people they need to talk to.
  • A steadily growing newsletter. Yet engagement doesn't match the effort you spend writing each week.
  • Years of money mindset work, with the stray thought, “Should I lower my rates?”
  • A spark of messaging clarity, when plugged into AI, only turns into a slightly reworded version of every other website in your niche.
  • A dream client. Until you realize one tiny dealbreaker that disqualifies them.

So what’s the best way to attract, convert, and serve clients in a discernment boom?

1. Refine your messaging and copy.

If your marketing is working, but folks aren’t connecting with the copy on your website, you're just sending your ideal clients on a wild goose chase.

In a discernment boom, your messaging becomes mission-critical because it’s the KEY WAY people are “pulling apart” your services to evaluate fit.

They’re subconsciously evaluating:

  • Are you the right person for me?
  • How do I know this will actually work?
  • Why should I trust you?
  • What do I do next?

Answering them in an FAQ section isn’t enough.

You have to answer them well, with the assurance woven throughout every word, every page, every post, email, or pitch.

Clients don't just need to know you’re the right fit. They need to feel it too.

That's why I started offering Messaging Intensives. Because sometimes you have all the words, but you don’t know how to fit them together to strategically stand out. (If this is you, let's chat.)

2. Double down on the marketing channels that actually bring an ROI.

Where do your clients come from? How are they being nurtured towards working with you? What’s the conversion rate on your website? How long do people stay on your newsletter?

Keep in mind: You can’t out-market a message that doesn’t land. See #1. ☝️

3. Build and nurture your network.

As someone who has hosted low-key networking events since 2023, I wholeheartedly believe in the power of relationship marketing, community-building, and creating spaces where genuine collaborations can transpire.

And I know how much work it can take to maintain relationships, how easy it is to text the same 10 people, and how transactional networking can feel.

Even so, when we need to be discerning, we turn to our people first.

Before you start googling networking events in your area, look at your data to see how much your network influences your bottom line, then choose if and how you’ll invest in it.

And if you aren’t choosing to put energy into your network, make sure your copy can do the trust-building that would otherwise come from word-of-mouth.

(Remember, having a solid network is about more than just getting business it helps make the work sustainable and fun!)

4. Observe, refine, repeat.

The only business you can “set and forget” is those 25-cent gumball machines at the mall (which have been abandoned at this point anyway).

Business is an ecosystem. Someone refers to you, or a client finds you through a media feature. They engage with your content and convert, linger, or disappear.

You start to see the patterns: the clients who stick, the reasons people rave about you, and the pitches that spark something bigger.

You take stock. You refine. You amplify. You rest. And then you keep going.

Whether you think we’re in a trust recession – or you’d like to adopt the term “discernment boom” – the way to move forward is pulling the business levers that matter most.

TLDR: If you’d like a more empowering reframe to this “trust recession,” let’s call it a discernment boom. Clients aren’t gone. They just need a better reason to say yes.

Instead of panicking, do three things: figure out what's actually bringing you clients (and track it, for reals), make sure your copy sticks & sells, and find the awesome people who want to do this work alongside you. 💚
