Writing your website copy for the first time can feel very vulnerable, especially if you’re not used to putting yourself “out there” and being visible.
Even though I’ve been a professional copywriter for 5+ years now, some days I still feel like I’m a newbie, learning all the time. (This was my biggest ah-ha in 2024.)
Back when I first wrote my therapy website in 2016, I obsessed over what to write. Hitting "publish" felt like exposing my heart to the entire world, especially since I chose a niche that barely anyone was serving at the time, and many even questioned its existence.
Here are 3 things I wish someone had told me before I wrote my first website:
🌪️ Let your first (and second and third) draft be messy AF.
It’s natural to want to skip steps, edit as you write, and try to write a final draft on your first try. But if you’re writing copy, that’s not going to reveal the gem of your message.
Let yourself have a first draft. Get your thoughts on the page, let them breathe, and come back with fresh eyes. It’s the best gift you can give yourself.
🖌️ Published over perfect
Effective copy is engaging and emotionally connects to your clients. But that can’t happen if those words are not discoverable by them.
Hit publish even if it’s not ‘perfect’. It never will be, and that’s okay.
Your niche, message, and clinical interests will evolve over time, especially as you grow as a professional and a person.
In the meantime, give your ideal clients the gift of discovering you exactly as you are, in this precious moment.
🎓 Focus on your voice over credentials.
Experiment with what writing process helps you feel most connected to your heart and your authentic voice. That’s what matters. Your ideal client will feel this energy subliminally in your copy, and the right ones will be drawn to it.
Yes, you’ll want to make sure that you highlight your specialized training, but that will only feel relevant to your client if they feel an emotional connection to you first.
✨ Give your ideal clients the gift of discovering you. ✨
Right now, someone is searching for their ideal healing practitioner or therapist.
What steps can you take so they can find you?
Hit “reply” and share your next step with me.
